CINCINNATI – As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries and redefine the future of work, 外网天堂 (Mount) is preparing students to lead that future through a distinctly human centered approach.

Beginning in Fall 2026, the Mount will offer a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and an Artificial Intelligence minor while expanding AI education across disciplines. More than introducing a new academic program, the initiative reflects the Mount’s broader strategy to prepare graduates to use artificial intelligence responsibly, ethically and creatively in every profession.

Rooted in the University's Catholic mission, the human centered AI initiative emphasizes that technology should enhance human potential, not replace it, and should always be used in service of the common good.

"Artificial intelligence is one of the most transformative technologies of our time, but its greatest value comes from the people who use it,"said Rebecca Allen, Computer Science chair and assistant professor. "At the Mount, we're preparing students not only to understand AI, but to apply it thoughtfully and ethically in their careers and communities."

The Mount’s approach aligns with the Catholic tradition of human dignity and responsible innovation. It reflects the recent call from Pope Leo XIV to ensure artificial intelligence serves humanity and the common good. Consistent with that philosophy, the Mount believes there will always be a need for compassionate nurses, inspiring teachers, talented performers, servant leaders in business and professionals who understand how technology can strengthen human relationships.

The human centered AI initiative includes a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, a new AI minor available to students from any discipline, and expanded AI learning opportunities integrated throughout the university's curriculum.

Students pursuing the major will complete a co-op, internship or volunteer experience, gaining practical experience before graduation. The program also embraces an interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to combine artificial intelligence with fields such as business, healthcare, education, and many others.

Recognizing that AI literacy is becoming essential regardless of career path, the Mount has also developed AI coursework that is available to all students. New courses such as Practical AI and Computers I introduce the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, computing systems and real-world applications. Ethics and Society in Artificial Intelligence and Technology explores the ethical, social and policy implications of emerging technologies, while Design Thinking, AI, and the Future of Innovation combines human-centered design with artificial intelligence to help students solve complex challenges across a variety of disciplines.

"Artificial intelligence is not simply a computer science topic anymore," said Dean, School of Arts & Sciences, Michael Sontag. "Every industry is being transformed by AI, and our graduates will be prepared to understand the technology, evaluate it critically and apply it responsibly in whatever career they pursue."

Students in the AI major will develop technical skills in programming, data management and large language models while learning to evaluate emerging technologies through the lens of ethics, critical thinking and the liberal arts. They will gain experience implementing AI tools with an emphasis on privacy, security and responsible use, preparing them to help organizations identify and integrate the technologies that best fit their needs.

Graduates will be prepared for careers in AI consulting, software development, technology strategy, data analytics and other rapidly growing fields. The program also builds upon the success of the Mount’s Computer Science Department, which has consistently achieved outstanding job placement outcomes.

By integrating artificial intelligence throughout the curriculum, not just within one major, the Mount is preparing graduates across every discipline to thrive in an AI-powered future while remaining grounded in the university's commitment to human dignity and the common good.

“Artificial intelligence is a tool, not a replacement for human thinking,” said Allen. “A strong liberal arts education gives students the critical thinking skills needed to evaluate information, ask better questions and make thoughtful decisions. Those skills are more important than ever in the age of AI.”
