Chief of Police Kevin Koo and his team prioritize relationship-building and a proactive presence to ensure every member of the Mount Community feels seen, respected, and safe.
Chief of Police at 外网天堂, Kevin Koo chose to serve at the Mount because it offers a unique opportunity to make an impact on people’s lives. Being part of the Mount allows him and his team to contribute not only to safety, but to the overall student experience.
“Working at the Mount, in particular, stands out because of its strong sense of community,” says Chief Koo. “There’s a genuine emphasis on care, respect, and personal development. It’s not just about enforcement, it’s about building relationships, being visible and approachable, and creating an environment where students, faculty, and staff feel supported.”
Seen, Safe, and Supported: Heart of the MSJ Police Mission
The MSJ Police team understands the importance of community to ensure all voices are heard and safety needs are met, focusing on proactive, community-based support, rather than just reacting to incidents. The Mount offers safety work that spans emergency response, crime prevention, and departmental collaboration. By centering student and staff input, the team ensures every concern is addressed through established safety protocols to protect the entire campus.
On that same note, MSJ Police prioritize being present and always ready to help. This means officers walking through residence halls, stopping to talk with students, attending campus events, and building everyday relationships.
“Those small, consistent interactions go a long way in breaking down barriers and making individuals feel comfortable reaching out when something does happen,” he says.
Further, the team emphasizes treating every interaction with dignity and respect, regardless of the situation. Whether it’s a policy violation or a victim report, students are met with care and concern. Taking a few extra minutes to explain the “why” behind decisions or procedures helps students feel heard rather than just managed.
Chief Koo describes there are times when firm enforcement is necessary for safety, but there are also opportunities for redirection and support.
“We also partner closely with other campus resources such as Residence Life, Counseling Services, and Student Affairs, so that when a student needs more than just a police response, we can connect them to the right support system quickly.”
More Than a Badge
For Chief Koo, the most rewarding part is seeing the impact that everyday interactions can have on people’s sense of safety and belonging.
"With students, it’s those moments where trust builds over time. Watching students grow during their time on campus and knowing we played even a small role in helping them feel safe enough to focus on their education is incredibly meaningful.”
This same idea carries over to the rest of our on-campus Mount Community. “With faculty and staff, it’s the partnerships,” he asserts. “Working together to solve problems and keep the campus running smoothly creates shared purpose. Knowing that the community can rely on MSJ Police not just in emergencies, but for guidance and support is when public safety knows that our relationship is working.”
As for the day-to-day operations, Chief Koo says no two days are the same.
“One moment might involve helping someone through a stressful situation, and the next might be a casual, positive interaction that strengthens community trust,” he adds. “Those daily connections—big and small—are what turn public safety from just a function into something that genuinely supports the entire campus experience.”
